've noticed I'm spending increasing amounts of time in Ballard. Once upon a time, there was only the girl haven Olivine and a few other interesting shops along Ballard Avenue. But now the compact area has become a true destination shopping hot spot, and one I always recommend to visitors. The influx of hip boutiques and unique stores in Ballard continues, most recently with the opening of Blackbird, the men's clothing store that relocated from Fremont. And there's more to come.

Once I reached a "certain age" I began to develop an aversion to shopping for clothes. Pants were tighter, blouses gapped. But it was the rear view from a three-way mirror in a brightly lit dressing room that was most shocking. Where did I get all that flesh on my back? It looked like the part of a chicken no one wanted.

Consider the price of beauty: Last time I went to my hair dresser, I wrote a check for $170. That was for a haircut, single process color and tip. A recent facial was $70, plus tip. Full leg and bikini wax with tip was almost $100. Eyebrow tint, $12. A nourishing body wrap was $90 plus tip. You do the math — I'm afraid to.
