Appointments are filling up for discounted massages and facials during Spa Week, Sept 18-24. This is the first year Seattle has participated in the national event, which invites spas to offer high-end services for a flat fee of $50. An East Coast public relations firm started the promotion in 2004 to attract new customers for its clients in New York, and it's grown to include 10 major cities.

From the Capitol Hill shootings to confrontations at downtown bars, this spring has had its share of scary moments. If you've ever wondered what you can do to build a less violent society, Seattle's Home Alive center is already two steps ahead.
For more than a decade, Home Alive has worked to create a community free of hate and violence in Seattle through public education. Community members are invited to celebrate and support their mission Saturday at an annual dinner and art auction at the Swedish Cultural Center, titled "The Art of Self-Defense." Proceeds will continue to fund self-defense classes priced on a sliding scale, so that no one is turned away.
