In the four years since Fashion First was hatched by local event-planning company Joan & Jared Events, the homegrown fashion show has steadily gained momentum. At this year's runway show, which takes place August 2 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Fenix (21 and over only), you'll get a sneak peak -- and more -- of the fall fashions offered at Seattle's independent boutiques.

I recently went in search of casual home furnishings, specifically bedside tables, coffee tables, end tables and a chest of drawers. I thumbed through catalogs and found the perfect pieces -- simple lines and great colors, with the kind of timeless, cottage-y look that fits well with older homes. But then I looked at the prices.

Like the condos sprouting up all around it, the Copper Vine -- at the far edge of the Pike/Pine corridor -- is flourishing. Kim Hightower's woodsy shop packed with plants sprang up in March and has quickly become a popular little patch for urban gardeners.
