When Greenwood boutique Tweed opened its doors two years ago, it was an instant hit with fashion-savvy Seattle women -- particularly those with waistlines larger than a Livestrong bracelet. Though it certainly proffers its fair of share of clothes for little women, Tweed became known for its generous selection of real-world sizes, like tush-flattering James Jeans in sizes up to 34.

I love my mom dearly, but no matter how much time passes, I will never shake the disturbing vision of her mid-1970s yoga getup -- a scoop-necked, poly-something, long-sleeved leotard and matching full-length tights (with feet!) in dreary mocha. Thank goodness she was a short and not a venti; on more ample proportions than hers, the effect would have been downright dowdy.

South Lake Union's new urban dwellings pack a lot of style into very little square footage. The same can be said of Clover House, a home furnishings, plant and gift shop that opened last month to serve the neighborhood's urbane inhabitants.

If Seattle smells sweeter these days, we have Burien to thank. That South End city is no longer home to bath and body boutique Sweet Petula, which moved to Madison Valley last month, but it is where owner Cory Smith still makes the store's aromatic candles, soaps, lotions and sea salts.

Last year in Seattle, SpaWeek appointments were snatched up faster than free Mighty-O doughnuts in a Microsoft break room. This year, however, the generously discounted services -- each just $50 at eight participating spas and salons -- are still available days before the promotion's kick-off. SpaWeek takes place Sept. 17-23.

Even if you don't live north of downtown, chances are you will one day have occasion to visit Northgate Mall. Perhaps as a detour on a trip to Target, or a weekend afternoon when searching -- and paying -- for downtown parking is simply more effort than you can muster.

It's been a few years since Fremont could righteously profess to be Seattle's funkiest neighborhood, but it does claim one of the city's edgiest apparel stores for men and women. Sadly, that boutique, Enexile, will close at the end of the month.

For years, the Northgate outpost of Gene Juarez Salons & Spas has toiled in the shadows of the chain's more polished locations in downtown Seattle and Bellevue. That's about to change with the opening of a bigger, prettier salon and spa at the North Seattle mall, which is currently undergoing a massive makeover. The new salon and spa will open Nov. 5.

It isn't often that Kent can flaunt its superiority in any arena related to shopping. But there is one small segment in which the South King County town has triumphed for more than three decades: surplus. With the looming closure of the Boeing Surplus Store Dec. 21, though, Kent's discounted densitometer domination will come to an end.
