I know some cringe at the thought of dining out alone, though I've always enjoyed going solo. Sometimes this girl just wants to nosh and sip cocktails minus-one or sans the entire posse. After a hectic day at the office, I look forward to a pleasant meal out on my own with no distractions. Don't get me wrong, my friends are all fabulous, and yes, there's no place like home if you want to be alone. Yet, an empowering, self-indulgent time out on the town is often necessary.

Every Tuesday night, a crowd of 100 or so gathers at the Mirabeau Room to participate in the slam -- as a performance artist, an active audience member or simply to observe. Folks come to emote, commiserate, support, cheer wildly and even heckle. For the most part, however, the Seattle audience is quite polite.
