Got the sniffles? A big bowl of homemade soup from Nana's Soup House near University Village may not be your grandmother's supersecret chicken noodle cure-all, but it will certainly warm you up when you're feeling a bit worn down. We love the hearty vegetarian baked-potato soup, thick with cream and chunks of potato, but with none of that pesky broth to get in the way. A few steamy bites of the velvety potage, and colds just seem to melt away -- at least long enough to get through the rest of the day.

You don't need to wait until Talk like a Pirate Day to stumble into the Jolly Roger Taproom in Ballard with your crew and order up a heaping plate of Po' Lil' Oysters ($2.75 each or 3 for $6.95).

Early on Friday evenings, just before I head out to the bars, I get a powerful craving for pollo guisado. This fantastic dish -- "stewed chicken," literally translated -- is one of the star items at Ballard's cozy, welcoming Puerto Rican restaurant and premium rum bar La Isla, and if you want a hearty base upon which to build a towering buzz, there's absolutely nothing better.

When we've had our fill of turkey and are stuffed with stuffing, we slide into Ristorante Machiavelli's dimly lit dining room on Capitol Hill for bang-up basic Italian comfort food done right.

Eating alone is tedious. After all, how long can you admire the art on a restaurant's walls, or stare at your own wine glass? But there is one major upside to dining solo: There's no need to share a single crumb of your dessert.

It's another gray and misty Sunday morning. Take refuge from the rain in Jade Garden's
tiny lobby, which is crammed until 3 p.m. with hungry guests who
wistfully watch the dim sum trolleys wheel by. Food rolls through here
so quickly, though, that even if you show up at the busiest hour,
you'll be pointing and nodding at your favorite bamboo baskets of
yumminess in no time. We're more than happy to wait a little while to
stuff ourselves with mouthfuls of barbecue pork hum bao. These little
pillows of fluffy steamed dough may look like plush toys, but each airy
bite is generously packed with succulent and slightly sweet morsels of
shredded pork that warm us through to our toes.

We've run our triathlons, eaten our salads and watched our waistlines
all summer long. But sweater season has arrived, so who's going to
notice if we indulge in a little comfort food? Crisp on the outside,
creamy on the inside, the fries ($2.80) at gourmet sandwich shop Baguette Box
are a piping hot mouthful of salty goodness. We always spend the extra
$2 and anoint them with a hearty shake of truffle oil for a decadent
kick that knocks us off our feet. They may be Atkins' worst nightmare,
but they're our delicious daydream!
