Mike Hein and Tony Portugal, co-owners of Belltown's new The Yellow Leaf Cupcake Company,
think that "the world is a better place with cupcakes." To wit, they're
serving up cupcakes ($2.95) in more than 60 inventive flavors including
French Toast and Mexican Chocolate, along with a wide selection of
loose leaf tea and French press coffee.

Summertime
and the reading is easy -- breezy novels, compelling memoirs and sexy vampire
romances; hey, it's your beach blanket, indulge. Your
dog, on the other paw, would like you to sit up and pay attention to "The
Dog Lover's Companion to the Pacific Northwest" ($21.95) and "The Dog
Lover's Companion to Seattle" ($17.95), by Seattle author Val
Mallinson.

Seattle-based jewelry designer Lyndsay Brown likes to wear romantic, vintage
dresses with industrial pieces like heavy boots. She expresses her personal
style, which she describes as "softness with an edge," in each piece of beautiful,
commanding jewelry she makes for her line, idle hands designs.

One hallmark of a good toy
store is that it transports you to a happy place the minute you walk through
the door. For parents, what makes for a happy place is a clutter-free,
reasonably priced shop that is easy to navigate a stroller through. For kids, a
happy place is one that has something for everyone, from a theater with
princess outfits for dress-up to whole sections dedicated to airplanes,
dinosaurs and robots. Madison Park's new Red Wagon has got all that and more.

Soaps are the creation of Katie McCallister, a young twentysomething who's busy
mixing up batches of yummy soaps, lotion bars, lip balms and solid perfumes in her
Greenwood home.
Somehow, McCallister has figured out how to blend her chosen ingredients and
scents so that not only does everything look and smell wonderful before you use
it, your skin feels divine as a result.

How
would you like to spend 6 to 8 months of your life on a diet consisting solely
of pureed fruits and vegetables? Well,
you already have, but you were just a baby and chances are, no one was adding
cardamom, coconut cream, edamame or other flavorful touches to liven things up. Wee
ones graduating to solid food can now say goodbye to creamed spinach and hello
to a smorgasbord of world cuisine such as Tokyo Tum Tum, Baby Dal, Sweetie
Tahiti, or Que Pasa Calabasa, courtesy of Dr. Susanna's World Baby Foods.

Home to renegades, artists and
fine drinking establishments, Georgetown
is widely known for its independent streak. So it seems fitting that the
neighborhood is also now home to Frida, a new shop that embraces the work of
independent local artists.

It's
hard to miss local designer Shannon Martin's cards, notepads and other paraphernalia around town, with
her trademark pairing of sultry, cheeky or downright sentimental vintage family
photographs topped by unforgettable quotes such as Oscar Wilde's "Be
yourself. Everyone else is already taken." Now
you can add a dose of that sass to your bath with Martin's newly released line of Feel
Goods Bath Salts, in a dozen scents that will turn your bath hour into happy hour.

Seafair, Seattle's quintessential summertime celebration,
culminates July 31-Aug. 2 with the Chevrolet Cup hydroplane races and KeyBank
air show, which take place on and above Lake Washington.
In honor of the annual festival, I searched the city's boutiques to find
sailor-themed apparel to help you rock the boat in style.

It's
Saturday morning and Ballard resident Laura McLeod is at Kick It Boots &
Stompwear on NW Market Street.
But it's not the latest Italian boots she's after. McLeod has purchased several
3-pound jars of Buck Hollow Farms raw honey from Poulsbo that, literally, just
came off the boat, known as Whisper and home to Sail Transport Company.
