Last year in Seattle, SpaWeek appointments were snatched up faster than free Mighty-O doughnuts in a Microsoft break room. This year, however, the generously discounted services -- each just $50 at eight participating spas and salons -- are still available days before the promotion's kick-off. SpaWeek takes place Sept. 17-23.

I could have headlined this blog entry with any number of terrible double entendres. I could have said "Ballard is getting Vain" or "Ballard receives a Vain effort" and slept well tonight, because I would be speaking the literal truth. Vain has opened a new branch on Ballard Avenue, and there is an awful lot of vanity on display in Ballard's bars and restaurants these days. (You know who you are, sweetness.)

I love my mom dearly, but no matter how much time passes, I will never shake the disturbing vision of her mid-1970s yoga getup -- a scoop-necked, poly-something, long-sleeved leotard and matching full-length tights (with feet!) in dreary mocha. Thank goodness she was a short and not a venti; on more ample proportions than hers, the effect would have been downright dowdy.

When Greenwood boutique Tweed opened its doors two years ago, it was an instant hit with fashion-savvy Seattle women -- particularly those with waistlines larger than a Livestrong bracelet. Though it certainly proffers its fair of share of clothes for little women, Tweed became known for its generous selection of real-world sizes, like tush-flattering James Jeans in sizes up to 34.

Like many of my friends, I experienced severe closet envy throughout Sarah Jessica Parker's run as Carrie Bradshaw on "Sex and the City." Naturally, I had high expectations for Bitten, the clothing line Parker designed for the Steve & Barry’s chain, which last month opened in Everett, their fourth outpost in Washington (the others are in Auburn, Olympia and Spokane).

There are many pretenders to the throne, but make no mistake: Fantagraphics Books is the very embodiment of so-called alternative comics.

Another highlight of the week will be Saturday's David Lawrence Runway Special, showcasing collections from D&G, Versace and John Richmond ($25). It will take place at an upscale space developed especially for Fashion Week called the Axis, located in Lincoln Square. Some event proceeds benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Appointments are filling up for discounted massages and facials during Spa Week, Sept 18-24. This is the first year Seattle has participated in the national event, which invites spas to offer high-end services for a flat fee of $50. An East Coast public relations firm started the promotion in 2004 to attract new customers for its clients in New York, and it's grown to include 10 major cities.

One of my favorite pastimes while doing shopping "research" is bakery-hopping. I'm always looking for the best of my favorites - poppy seed cake, brownies, Russian teacakes, chocolate chip cookies, breads, cinnamon rolls, croissants … well, you get the picture.
