On days when we just need a sweet little something-something, we head to Casuelitas Island Soul in the Central District for light-as-air coconut cornbread ($1 each). The golden little muffins may not look like much perched alongside one of the café's huge Caribbean sandwiches, but just a nibble of the tender bread reminds us why we came. These are no dry, heavy hockey pucks, but mere wisps of cake held together by gossamer coconut threads. How so much buttery, sweet flavor can get packed into such a tiny, fluffy package, we'll never understand. We just chalk it up to a little island magic.
What do you crave? Which local restaurant makes the cornbread that drives you to distraction? Post a comment below and tell us about it.
