The holidays, with all their rich food and flowing drink, are well upon us. When we've had our fill of turkey and are stuffed with stuffing, we slide into Ristorante Machiavelli's dimly lit dining room on Capitol Hill for bang-up basic Italian comfort food done right. We can't resist the Conchiglie della Casa, with its oodles of tiny emerald ear-shaped shells bathed in a light tomato sauce. Each toasty scoop of pasta brings with it wafts of fennel and pepper from sweet and tender ground Italian sausage. A little sprinkling of grated parm, of course, rounds out each bite. Nothing fancy or fussy, it's a welcome break from all the feasting.
What do you crave? Which local restaurant makes the comfort food that drives you to distraction? Post a comment below and tell us about it.
