Too wet outside for a bike ride? Don't despair, activities freaks. Seattle has seen one or two rainy days in its time, and the city boasts plenty of fun things to do under a sheltering roof.
FUN AND GAMESBowling alleys and billiard parlors It doesn't matter how old you are bowling or shooting pool is always fun. Fun Forest (Seattle Center) The Seattle Center amusement zone's huge arcade has Skee-Ball. 'Nuff said. GameWorks (Downtown) Turn off your Xbox and go to this two-story nexus of fun to play ... um, video games. Seattle/Edmonds Whirlyball Center (Edmonds) It turns out that mixing LaCrosse with bumper cars actually results in a sport. Go figure. Independent video stores Curl up with a rare movie that no one at the major-chain video store has even heard of. MOVIN' AND GROOVIN' Indoor swimming pools If you can't beat the water, why not join it? Kingsgate Ice Arena (Kirkland) When all else fails, take our advice: Put on your skates and glide on the ice. REI (Eastlake / Lake Union) Is Vantage too wet and slippery for climbing? REI boasts a 65-foot climbing wall. Skate King (Bellevue) Rent some roller skates or in-line skates and circle the rink. Making yourself feel good is just that easy. Stone Gardens (Ballard) This "climber's gym" is lined with climbing walls and more than a hundred possible ascents. MUSEUMS AND MORE Seattle Aquarium (Downtown) Stare fixedly into the 400,000-gallon walk-through fish tank; check out the live octopi, seahorses and jellyfish; or just go with the flow. Experience Music Project (Seattle Center) Learn all there is to know about the rock 'n' roll sound of the Northwest, through artifacts and interactive exhibits. Northwest African American Museum (Central District) NAAM documents and explores the experience of African Americans in the Northwest through visual arts, music, crafts, literature and history. Odyssey Maritime Discovery Center (Downtown) Do you have what it takes to be a sailor? Find out through hands-on exhibits. Pacific Science Center (Seattle Center) Ramble through five buildings of science exhibits, two IMAX theaters, a planetarium, a butterfly habitat and more. Science Fiction Museum (Seattle Center) You don't have to be a Trekkie to grok this universal collection of sci-fi ephemera. Seattle Central Library (Downtown) In addition to being an architectural marvel, the Rem Koolhaas-designed library is a reader's paradise. |
