Gentle Snark
This Friday, Saturday and Sunday, three blocks of California Avenue Southwest will represent the singular charm of West Seattle. The 26th annual Summer Fest features live music on two stages, a giant family play area, two beer gardens, a sprawling arts and crafts fair, sidewalk sales by neighborhood businesses, art activities for kids, great outdoor eatin', the celebrated Saturday Night Street Dance and more.

Amazingly, there's still room in Seattle Tilth's camps, in their fairy-touched Children's Garden, blossoming with edible flowers, herbs and other delicious plants.

The Virginia Inn has operated almost continuously for 100 years under
various owners. The current ones, Jim Fotheringham and Patrice
Demombynes, have spruced it up nicely for the next century. While the
kitchen still has some kinks to work out, I'd encourage you to join the
regulars and hoist a glass at this nostalgic saloon.

What We Crave
There's nothing like strawberry ice cream to cool you down on a hot summer day. But we crave an enormous scoop of Molly Moon's balsamic strawberry ice cream in any weather.

Gentle Snark
Last year I decided to get a pair of quad skates and go trail-skating with my girlfriend, a Rat City Rollergirl. I'd whip around the Green Lake loop, glide along Alki and barrel through Myrtle Edwards wearing a pair of blue satin Dolphin shorts and a pair of Radio Shack AM/FM radio headphones. (You were totally thinkin' that.) And when I felt confident enough, I would begin skating the new Ballard leg of the Burke-Gilman Trail -- the Interstate 5 of Seattle's recreational trails.

We Northwest parents are suckers for a good cup of joe. Probably because we were up all night, taking care of a bawling baby, teething toddler, or sick kid.
So I love it whenever a new kid-friendly coffee shop opens.

Are you still looking for a swimsuit for this summer's poolside bashes
or weekend afternoons at the beach? Stop by bikini central, aka Tininha's
in Fremont. The newly remodeled boutique has updated its digs and
expanded its selection of bikinis (and one-piece suits), and added more
handbags and clothing to the mix.

In late January 2000, Pacific Northwest magazine profiled
lifelong Georgetown resident Jon Dove, that year's grand-prize winner
of the Arboretum Foundation's Pacific Northwest Garden contest. The
garden of his towering 1905 home was resplendent with lush foliage,
prolific roses and an onion-dome-shaped privet. Now Dove and more than 20 of his neighbors are busily sprucing up their gardens for the 13th annual Georgetown Art and Garden Walk, which takes place Sunday, July 13.

If you're a guy looking for summer shoes and the idea of "mandals"
-- Birkenstock's uptown cousins -- gives you the willies, you are not
alone.
That's why I recently decided to ask Mario's men's footwear
specialist, John Lee, about appropriate choices for men who want casual
but dressy summer footwear. John was happy to show me his favorites while offering
some good solid tips.
