For some of us, a houseplant is like another member of the family, worthy of love, attention and TLC. Jay Longtin, a former sales representative, is one of those green-thumbed Seattleites who appreciate the fresh oxygen and soothing green that houseplants provide. A lover of exotic and tropical houseplants, Longtin has parlayed this passion into Envy, his month-old plant and patio store in the Central District.

Minding the Store
My absolute favorite Seattle boutique Last Waltz is having a their first anniversary sale and party on friday, August 29. Owner Cybele Philips has the most incredible eye and blends vintage scores with modern designers to create a fresh and innovative style. I always walk out of that store with something - from a great pair of vintage shoes for $18 to a new top from Dace.

A few days ago, I learned that treat shop Chocolate Box near Pike Place Market is celebrating its one-year anniversary this month. That's great news, and I offer my heartfelt congratulations, but what really has me jumping for joy is the shop's benediction of the Oh-My-Gawdo, a sublime concoction for which I would happily suffer eternal brain freeze.

Dining with kids presents a number of challenges -- there are bed times and food preferences to work around, not to mention any number of smaller technical difficulties such as high-chair procurement, bib installation and volume control. Nonetheless, a family must eat, and experiencing the diverse cuisines of Seattle can be a fun way for families to get to know their city.

Though your brother claimed to love the pipe-cleaner key ring you made for him last Christmas, you couldn't help but notice a less crafty contraption dangling from his ignition. Perhaps this year it would be best to entrust your artsy gift-giving inclinations to real artists.

With a strong nod to eco-friendly fashions, Last Waltz, a new boutique in the Central District, brings together vintage office wear from the 1980s (think high-waist trousers and ruffled satin blouses) with new offerings from regional designers.

Ever dive fingers first into a spicy plate of Eritrean lamb stew and lentils, wash it down with a cold Red Stripe, then turn your attention to the rhymes of Seattle's b-girls?
