In times of stress, I employ one of two strategies. The first is to take my beleaguered body to a spa for a little pampering. The second is to spend time with my girlfriends. So when spa parties came into fashion and married the two, I was thrilled to attend the wedding.

The latest local spa-party offering comes from Willows Lodge, a picturesque and supremely comfortable resort in Woodinville. Home to two renowned restaurants, The Herbfarm and Barking Frog, Willows Lodge also houses a serene spa, which is where the Very Important Girlfriends Party takes place.

The V.I.G. package includes a chair massage and pedicure for six to 12 gals, plus snacks, desserts and beverages, such as champagne or non-alcoholic spritzers. The spa services are administered in a private room warmed by a fireplace and outfitted with comfy chairs, and pedicures are performed in a cozy, wood-shingled room that was once a patio.

The media was introduced to the package last night, and I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical of a chair massage's ability to untangle the knots tied by Wall Street, politicians and an anxiety-ridden dog. But 20 minutes after I sat down, I was so relaxed, I was practically drooling. Had my girlfriends been with me, I'm sure they wouldn't have minded.

What sets this spa party apart is that you and your crew have the space to yourself (no need to whisper if the conversation devovles into gossip), you are treated to some fantastic small bites and sweets, and the lush, wine-country setting is far more soothing than anything you'll find in the city.

The gatherings cost $70 per person for a two-hour party, and are perfect for birthdays and showers. The V.I.G. party would also make a great escape on election night. (There will be plenty of time to watch the returns after your pedicure.)

The parties are available Monday through Thursday evenings, and must be booked at least two weeks in advance. If you decide to stay at Willows Lodge after your party, you can book a room for $195 (single or double occupancy, based on availability).
