I used to live up the street from Three Dog Bakery and spoiled my pug rotten with their doggie baked goods. I think it might have contributed to her midlife paunch, but pugs exist to be pampered and I am happy to do so.
I’m sad to report that Three Dog Bakery is closing their Downtown store on June 22. From now until then take 30 percent off the ticketed price on all chews, beds, toys, clothing, carriers, collars, leashes, bowls and more. The sale does not extend to food or Three Dog Bakery treats, but I think we’ll have to swing by for a farewell Pupcake nonetheless.

Post a commentNow there's a discretionary spending item that SHOULD go out of favor in an economy where many homeowners are under water on their mortgages, unemployment is high, and more and more people are venturing into a WalMart for the first time in order to keep to their budgets!
Good for those who still have money to toss into the crapper to feel good about how they treat their pets, I suppose. You're luckier than most. But, in this economy, I find it a bit offensive that people are indulging their animals (who likely couldn't care less what they're eating as long as it's edible) rather than, say, tossing $5 more at the local food bank to help their neighbors. You know, the HUMAN ones.
Many of the rest of us, including myself, can't even remember the last time we bought a bakery treat FOR OURSELVES. The discretionary dollars just aren't there.
Of course, you could quit being bitter about your lot in life, and go get a job. Putting down others, and their lifestyles, is pretty offensive to those of us WHO WORK for the ability to spoil our pets. In case you weren't smart enough to realize, the bakery is closing BECAUSE OF THE ECONOMY. Thusly, the proprietors cannot afford to pay the bills. A boat which you cast yourself in. So........what is the difference between your inability to buy a muffin, and their inability to keeps the bills paid??? Nothing. Think before you start whining, twit.
Unfortunate to see a small business go under, but really, was gourmet dog treats ever considered a sustainable business model?
The fact is this establishment has the reputation of being a place where dog lover's can congregate, but also where dog issues can be discussed and resolved collectively. Animal rescue groups met there, since animals can't get jobs and throw money into a food bank, and other life improving animal topics were shared. Someone seems to forget that animals have a proven record of improving human life as full-time or additional companions in a family setting. It is a shame that a small business like TDB is going under considering it takes quite a bit of CASH to open the store in the first place. It is also a shame that in this economy it is the little things like this that are impacted. There are humans behind this store's operation, not animals.
@anonymouscommenter -- This business model probably isn't the best one for this current economy. There are still many people out there with good jobs, saved their money and arent troubled during these times. Not everyone planned well so if things are tight, they shouldn't be buying these types of amenities. Just because you cant buy yourself a fresh item from the bakery, don't hate on the people that can. Also I personally am not a dog person, but people have dogs instead of children and they are their children. So a small treat or item is their way of showing love. $5 to some people is a nickel to us. Sorry to see any business fail maybe they will be able to create an online presence and come back when the economy is ready. I wish them luck.
I am sure that the owners of Three Dogs Bakery might also have a mortgage to pay. I cannot say I have ever stepped foot inside the store but it might be a bit rash to judge others discretionary spending. And we should all be giving as much as possible....and more so with so many in need in the seattle area.
This bakery has such a great reputation-a strong proponent of a small business endeavor. I am sorry they'll close. I hope they can rediscover themselves online or in a smaller way.
Wow. How bitter are most of you guys? The people that own/work in this shop are losing their jobs just like everyone else. Instead of saying that they deserve to lose their job because it was a 'worthless' way to spend money, be respectful.
First, to the bitter anonymouscommenter, how people spend their money and time is their own business, in whatever economy.
Second, to 3 Dogs, we will miss you very much--and see you at your close-out sale.
Jason
We love your store: the cakes, edible greeting cards, and many more goodies for dogs. It is sad to see you go. Good luck.
I am sorry to see this unique busines, which made a really good go of it for a time, go out of business. But I am even more saddened by the attitudes expressed about the justification for why it should go out of business . . . because it offers a luxury item! If this is the case, then it is time for video game sellers to close up (what good do they contribute?) and boat, RV, and monster truck sales to end. I also expect all boutiques, antique dealers and sellers of high-priced, celebrity endorsed sports shoes to be close behind . . .
What next? Will we will hear sickening applause when art galleries and live theatres begin to fail? C'mon . . . there is more to life and living than being judged by whether one provides what you deem a necessity.
To BitterAnonymousCommenter:
Save your vitriol and money and get an education.
Learn what a "market-economy" is. And don't waste your useless breath commenting about what OTHER people should do with THEIR MONEY.
Go EARN YOUR OWN< DONATE IT IF YOU WANT TO but for goodness sake, shut your piehole.
To anonymous: I do toss money into the coffers of charities (and buy my dogs treats to boot), but only those for dogs, given how many of those humans you're so crazy about behave like you do. I'd rather help dogs, who want nothing more in this world than someone to love and take care of them, than people, most of whom are responsible for their own lot in life.
Emily, I couldn't have said it better myself. I second those words.
Not to mention when things are bleak many of us 'important' humans rely on our pets to keep us happy. That's surely worth as much as we'd spend on a latte, isn't it?
Hopefully Three Dogs can find new life online.
I am really sad to see Three Dog go. I used to take my last dog, Stella, there for an occasional treat, but it was more than that. They were really friendly and helpful special-ordering collars, tags and leashes, the toys were great, and my dog got to socialize with other dogs downtown. Too bad they won't be around anymore so I can enjoy their store with my next dog.
Thanks for the memories, Three Dog Bakery.
Oh what a shame to see another small, independent business go under. No matter what they sell, another small business out of business is bad for everyone. Another empty storefront, less taxes for the city, another loss of jobs, community etc. NO MATTER WHAT they sell. Home stores, cookies for dogs, cafes, clothing stores..who cares..it's a business and it helps the economy. Small business drives the US Economy, and we should all celebrate and support small businesses to thrive through the rest of the year. It's bad for everyone to have these stores close. You will be missed 3D..I have a dog, and he loved your treats.
Animouscommentator, I recently tried to donate $140 in rolled quarters to Northwest Harvest. Road and building construction is rampant on Cherry (the only NW Harvest location that could accept cash) and no parking was available. I called them on my cell phone and asked them to send someone out to pick up the 14 rolls of quarters. Their response? "NO". I drove away and went straight to "Meow" in Kirkland. Not only did they gladly accept the donation, they gave provided the needed paperwork for a tax deductible donation and parking was free to boot. Animals are being surrendered by the thousands in this country as a result of the bad economy. Quit begrudging the critters getting a meal.
Three Dog is still alive and well elsewhere, and online --

We animals know how hard it is when you, our owners, lose your jobs. You have to bring us here, to Elliott St. in hopes we'll find a new home and someone else to love us like you did. That doesn't always happen. Some of us end up on "death row". Like you humans say, that's life.
Of course, MOST of us don't come from RICH families, like the ones who can give their pets the "special stuff". We come from the middle-class and the poor. The people that run this place have so much on their hands with all of us misplaced and unwanted pets here, that you can imagine the quality of life we "live" here, meanwhile.
To Mistress Brownrigg: I seriously doubt you love your precious pug as much as you say you do. If you DID, you would NOT be overfeeding your dog and giving it a "paunch". You are killing the very thing you claim to love by not taking proper care of it. Sound familiar? Do YOU overeat? Because we all know that we as pets end up resembling our Masters/Mistresses in that manner. If you're fat, you make US fat, too by feeding table scraps and totally ignoring what my doctor The Vet, told you.
I'm sure the homemade special baked treats are fantastic (I'm drooling just thinking about one), but I have a suggestion to the owners: Please, Please DONATE what you can to US ON ELLIOTT STREET!!! We really need it!!!!! We also realize you need money, too, but please know that we truly believe you love ALL animals, not just the ones who can prance personally into your store behind a Mistress wearing Prada.
~All the homeless and mistreated pets on Elliott St.
Reminds me of Alan Jackson's song "Little Man". =((
