All that glitters is on sale at Goodwill

October 27, 2006

Goodwill

The annual Goodwill Glitter Sale is a bargain hunter's dream. Scheduled in time for the holidays, it's your chance to get dressed to the nines for peanuts. And for the first time, the fashion feeding frenzy goes on for two days this year. Mark your calendars for Saturday, Nov. 4 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 5 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Goodwill saves up fancy clothes all year and offers everything you need for the season's soirees -- glamorous gowns and classic cocktail dresses, rhinestone jewelry, silver and gold shoes, beaded purses, leather jackets and skirts, and men's formalwear. Dresses run the gamut from basic black numbers to over-the-top sequined gowns. If you're looking for vintage wear, that's in a separate area. There is literally tons of clothing. Last year they sold more than 10,000 items. What will you pay? Dresses and jackets are $9.99 and up, shoes are $3.99 and up, and jewelry starts at $1.99. Vintage prices are higher.

Die-hard shoppers line up as early as 4:30 a.m. for this event, so it's a good idea to get there early. Last year 300 shoppers were in line before the doors opened. The amount of clothing, shoes and accessories can be overwhelming. Here are some tips for scoring pieces that work for you.

1. Once more, arrive early. Wear a warm wrap, but something that can be tucked in your purse. You don't want to keep taking a coat on and off.

2. Because there are no dressing rooms, wear leotards or a thin tank top and leggings so you can easily try things on. Wear slip-on shoes.

3. Bring a girlfriend. There are few mirrors. You can critique each other's choices.

4. Make a mental list of things you need. Are you just looking for the perfect shoes or evening bag for an outfit you already own?

5. Try on clothing first if you're looking for a whole outfit. Then hit the shoes, handbags, belts and other accessories.

6. Need jewelry? It goes fast. Head there first.

All this shopping madness is for a good cause, too. All proceeds benefit Goodwill's free job-training and education programs. Last year's sale raised more than $50,000.
