Buckle up and carry it all in Harveys Seatbelt Bags

March 9, 2007

Harveys Seatbelt Bags

Have you ever come across a cool invention or swanky product and thought, "I wish I invented that"? Harveys Seatbelt Bags may give you that feeling.

I first noticed them a few months ago when a fashionable-mom friend was using hers as a diaper bag. Large and functional, it looked like the perfect baby-gear tote. But then I saw another gal, this time a babyless stranger, sporting one over her shoulder as a purse. Until I saw them for sale at Fireworks recently, I had no idea the bags were made from seatbelts.

It all started with a 1950 Buick. After husband and wife Dana and Melanie Harvey installed new seatbelts in their vintage ride, Melanie made a matching handbag out of the excess seatbelt material and an unusual handbag business was born.

While you may have seen the solid-colored bags around town for a while, the company has some new multi-colored bags for sale. My favorite: the colorful "Paint by Numbers" large tote ($168).

Harveys Seatbelt Bags are available at Fireworks and online.
