The brilliant fashions of Alula, Jill Lindsey and Like A Rockstar draw on influences from Romanticism to the Rolling Stones

Flourishing fashion destination Portland may be home to Leanne Marshall, the newly crowned fifth-season winner of "Project Runway," but Seattle continues to be a thriving city for independent design. On Nov. 6, some of the brightest stars in Seattle's constellation of young designers will show their work at "Get Yr Fash On," a runway event at Mission in West Seattle.
Spearheaded by the three designers who make up Alula -- Katrina Thomson, Chelsey Burton and Beth O'Leary, who hosted a similar event last year with Prairie Underground -- "Get YR Fash On" promises a night of spectacular style from Alula, Jill Lindsey and Like a Rockstar. There'll be an MC, two DJs and three runway shows featuring models sashaying across the bar.
Two of the participating designers, Lindsey and Christopher Jones of Like a Rock Star, design custom handmade clothing. Lindsey, who once worked at Temperley London in New York, makes some of the most gorgeous and interesting special-occasion dresses I have encountered.
Inspired by nature and the Romantic era of late-18th century Europe, Lindsey adds neckline ruffles, bows and rosettes to complement the face. Her fall/winter 2009 collection, which is a perfect blend of modern architectural touches and demure, classic silhouettes, can be ordered at www.jilllindsey.com.
Heavily influenced by the Rolling Stones, Christopher Jones is a self-taught bespoke tailor who designs all the tour clothes for local band The Presidents of the United States of America. His Like a Rock Star collection of suits, jackets, trousers and shirts recall an era when rock stars made suits look sexy.
His designs are influenced by some of the best-dressed musicians of the 1960s and '70s, including the brilliant mod style of Brian Jones, the skinny decadence of a young Mick Jagger and the outlaw sensibilities of Johnny Cash and his fellow Highwaymen. Alula is a ready-to-wear line for the "girl on the go" who loves color and likes to have fun with fashion. Alula will show looks from their spring/summer 2009 collection, which was inspired by vintage swimwear. Using fabrics in vibrant shades of yellow, blue and cherry-popsicle red, Alula's whimsical new designs are perfect for leisurely bike rides and picnics at the beach. The event starts at 6 p.m., with Lindsey showing at 7 p.m., Like a Rockstar at 8 p.m., and Alula at 9 p.m. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.alulaclothing.com/news. (Don't forget to include your name for the guest list at the prompt for checkout.)
