As a displaced Southerner (I'm originally from Texas), I embrace any opportunity to partake in Southern rituals so far from the homeland. And May brings one of the most famous – the Kentucky Derby. A mere half hour drive away, Emerald Downs offers those of us without a flight to Louisville the opportunity to experience the Derby, Seattle style.
Of course, no self-respecting Southern lady would venture to any Derby event without the appropriate chapeau. So, I headed straight to Seattle's most renowned hat maker, Henrietta Swan-Rice, the owner of Henrietta's Hats in Madison Valley. For over two decades, Henrietta has provided guidance and design consultation for Seattle society's hat needs.
During my visit, Henrietta patiently scolded me on grabbing a $350 hat by its brim before showing me proper hat handling and application techniques. Full of encouragement and advice (comparing public hat removal with public indecency), Henrietta provides individual service and support amongst the best hat selection in town. After trying on a dozen selections, I settled on an Audrey-esque black straw hat that will surely win me the Most Glamorous award at Emerald Downs on May 5th.
Bring on the ponies.
