Stay dry -- or just fashionable -- in a stylish array of fall jackets

It's a perennial conundrum every fall. Do you pick a functional waterproof jacket or a stylish non-waterproof one? Rarely, it seems, do the two combine to form a perfect union of function and style, but when they do, it's a worthy investment.
I found a few examples of both stylish and waterproof jackets at Queen Anne Dispatch, from Merrell and the new-to-me line Lolë. Good old reliable Merrell offers a classic thigh-length, slightly fitted overcoat in both black and army green for $199 that features snaps at the cuff and a removable hood.
The Lolë jackets include a black waterproof jacket ($220) embossed with a unique glossy pattern, brushed fleece inside and a removable belt and hood; and, if you're looking for warmth, a long, faux-fur, hooded down jacket for $298 that will take you right through winter.
If you're just looking for a good selection of jackets from which to choose -- waterproof or not -- Horseshoe carries an impressive variety of jackets, from a short black puffer coat from Soia and Kyo with a chic cowl collar ($228) to an incredible blue tapestry coat from Young Essence ($128) that definitely leans toward fashion and away from function.
If you're on the lookout for a business-appropriate trench-style coat, head to Ella Mon in Ballard for a waterproof grey option with a hint of shimmer for $95 by Waterproof; or another grey one with dramatic ruffles along the front and bottom from Kello that runs $215.
I also really like the dusty purple, hooded coat from XCVI ($175) with slouchy tiers that doesn't offer much in terms of repelling water, but is perfect for throwing on over a thick sweater and jeans for a quick errand.
For a coat you're able to wear straight through until spring, head to Momo for a drop-waisted hooded one from Cop Copine for $365. Lightweight, stylish and roomy enough for layering, this coat comes in both subdued grey and vibrant red.
