Always on the lookout for new flower shops, I recently ran across Poppies Floral in Fremont, which opened Jan. 31 in the diminutive storefront once occupied by Show Pony. What was too small a space to contain a boutique is just perfect for a flower shop.

Local designer and former Seattle Times news artist
Boo Davis owns Quiltsrÿche, an "evil quilt empire," a place
where "evil and cute intersect." Davis has ingeniously found a way to combine her love of heavy metal
music with the somewhat staid domestic art of quilting. She blends
popular metal icons like the sign of the horns and song titles like
"God Bless the Children of the Beast" with classic quilting techniques.
The results are cheeky, rebellious and sometimes irreverent works of
functional art.

geodes and even felt-wrapped soaps.

The "Proust Questionnaire" is a beautifully bound book containing two questionnaires answered by Marcel Proust in 1886 when he was 15 and again in 1892 at age 20. The questions he answered have become a valuable tool for interviewers, made famous by Vanity Fair and James Lipton of "Inside the Actors Studio." In addition to Proust's answers, the book contains questionnaires filled out by actors and artists, as well as empty pages for friends and family to fill in.

a wine lover who doesn't really know anything about wine -- except what I like.
And that took me about 14 years to define! If there's a person on your holiday
gift list who loves wine and wants to learn more about it, the Washington Wine
Trails board game is an entertaining solution.

The weekend after Thanksgiving is a traditional time to get some holiday shopping done. This year, it might be nice to avoid the crowds at the mall and support local artists.
