Holiday 2006
It’s that time of year when skies turn grey, fingers turn crafty and thoughts turn toward holiday shopping. Seattle is home to scores of designers, artists and crafters, and this is never more evident than during the holidays, as craft shows large and small pop up all over town.

Owners Kimberly Lin and Jodie Marr had a clear aesthetic in mind when opening their shop in a khaki-colored vintage building made of concrete block. They wanted the open, square space and merchandise to reflect simple, clean design and contemporary use of color. One wall displays dozens of styles of colorful sheet wrapping paper and the opposite wall has orderly rows of single cards. Gifts, stationery and more wrap are displayed on simple, white tables and shelves. There's a refreshing absence of giant floral cards that read "To Mother and Father from Their Daughter."

Choosing a fine writing instrument is a lot like buying a car: “You need to test drive a lot of them,” says Marshall. “Not all pens work for individual writing styles.” Since the size, shape and flexibility of the nib determines the flow of ink and impacts the writer’s personal style, it’s important to find the type which best suits you and your budget. Collectors drop thousands on a single pen. But since we’re talking pens for writers, we’ve capped our choices at $150.

The duo started their company over a glass of wine in December 2005. Thiele bought a pair of tasseled pasties but never wore them. Armed with scissors, glue guns and materials, the pair created flirtatious feathered pasties, floral pasties and butterfly pasties. "We laughed so hard while trying different things," says Thiele.

This tiny gift shop is perfectly located in the heart of Madrona, right next to Verité -- the original home of Cupcake Royale, makers of those liberally frosted mini-cakes gaily topped with sprinkles. The charming storefront is just as enticing as the cupcakes, painted celadon green and festooned with flowers.
