Have you ever walked through
an open house and found yourself oohing and aahing over the way the house was
staged rather than the house itself? Realtor and stager
Katrina Puetz opened Furnishments in December 2008 as a place to sell pieces
from her staging company. The store has evolved to include furniture, home decor and accessories from the community
at large as well as fellow stagers.

Seattle is chock-full of wine
shops that regularly offer in-store tastings, allowing you to sample unfamiliar
wines before you buy them and saving you the expense of a wine you might not
like. Below
are three such wine stores near my north-end neighborhood, all of which
offer
weekly tastings, a great selection, some truly crazy bargains and loads
of hospitality. When I visited, I didn't find a single wine snob --
just great wine and happy customers.

uplifting floral scents, and locally made Petal Candles fit the bill nicely.

On my way to check out Take 5
Urban Market in Ballard, I recalled the corner store near my childhood home in
suburban Detroit.
It was kind of like
Mr. Hooper's store on "Sesame
Street," where neighbors chatted and you always
knew the guy behind the counter. I had high hopes that Take 5
would bring that same vibe to the corner of Eighth Avenue Northwest and
Northwest 70th Street.

The recent demise of Domino magazine has created a huge void in the lives of interior design lovers. Last month, a new shop arrived on Capitol Hill that nicely fills that Domino-shaped hole. Friends Dawn Bassett and Jennifer June have combined their shops, LiT and Hermitage (from Pioneer Square and Portland, respectively), and pooled their talents -- for creating couture lampshades and scouting unique small-production wallpapers -- into a one-stop shop for design inspiration.

President Barack Obama can take some of the credit for the recent surge in sales of salted caramels, but Lauren Adler, owner of sweets boutique Chocolopolis, has a more fundamental explanation for our obsession with the combination of chocolate, caramel and salt: "It's just good." Below are the salted caramels on offer at the Queen Anne shop, along with a more of our favorite locally available salty-sweet treats.
