Pre-assembled meals: the new food craze

November 2, 2005

Here are a few places to get cookin':
Dinners Ready: locations in Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond and more
Dream Dinners: locations in West Seattle, Kirkland, Shoreline and more
Designed Dinners: locations in Madison Park, Redmond and more
Dinners Done Right: locations in Federal Way, Bonney Lake and more
Month of Meals: located in Redmond

What do you call something that saves time, saves money and allows you to eat well without killing yourself cooking each night?

Some call it home meal replacements or fix-and-freeze dinners. Others call it pre-assembled entrees or ready-to-cook cuisine. But whatever you call it, this new trend-turned-food-frenzy consists of ordering and preparing several meals in advance at an industrial-style kitchen, then freezing the food to eat later. And although there's not an attractive household name for it, yet, the idea itself is highly attractive to a huge demographic — anyone who eats!

One of the first to initiate the pre-assembled meals idea was Dream Dinners, founded by two moms from Snohomish, Stephanie Firchau and Tina Kunain. In less than three years, the company has grown to nearly 100 locations across the nation. Practical, affordable and unbelievably tasty, the prepared-food phenomenon is spreading like wildfire and has sparked a number of other competing companies to open in the Seattle area and beyond. Those companies are thriving too, filling a need and countless growling tummies at the same time.

How does it work? Each company does it a little bit differently, but for the most part, this is the drill:

  • First you order a 6- or 12-meal package deal (either online or over the phone) from a menu which changes monthly. This helps accommodate for seasonal variety and special holiday treats such as turkey and gravy for the month of November, and popular outdoor grill recipes in July.
  • Once you've chosen your meals, you pick a session from the available openings, then wait (and salivate) until your timeslot arrives.
  • Upon arrival, all your of meals ingredients have been chopped, diced, portioned, pulled and stocked at individual assembly stations in a giant kitchen. All the spices are aligned, and measuring devices placed with each ingredient.
  • You wash your hands, put on an apron and begin assembling by following recipes posted at their appropriate stations. Some companies offer a glass of wine or a sample taste of an upcoming menu item while you "cook," giving the whole process a festive feel.
  • Once you finish a meal, you label it with pre-printed cooking instructions and begin stacking your meals into what feels like a mountain of food by the time you finish just an hour or two later.

And the best part? There's no clean-up duty. The staff busily busses your mess away while you work.

On average, each meal runs $14 to $20 and feeds four people. Compared to eating out or buying all the individual ingredients for each recipe, it's a bargain. Many pre-assembled meal fanatics will also say they save money by wasting less food (because all meals are freezer friendly) and making far fewer trips to the store (now going only for fresh produce and staples like milk and eggs).

While the idea was originally designed for soccer-mom types with hungry kids and husbands, it also appeals to anyone who is pressed for time and can't (or won't) cook at home regularly otherwise. This current fan base has quickly grown to encompass everyone from families with two working parents and sons or daughters who want to provide for their elderly parents, to expectant mothers, college students and bachelors who want to eat well but never knew how to cook before.

The use of the meals is also expanding. The majority of customers incorporate these meals into their daily dinner plan, but they are quickly finding other creative ways to take advantage of the convenience factor. For example, some customers will order 10 of the same entrée and throw a dinner party or family reunion minus the stress of cooking from scratch. Others will make three pumpkin cheesecakes all at once to bring to the in-laws for Thanksgiving.

"We're also seeing an increasing number of our customers fixing meals to bring with them on trips both near and far," says Leslie Thompson of Dream Dinners. "Some people will prepare meals to bring to their summer cabin for a long weekend. We even had a gal prepare a week's worth of food, pack it in dry ice, and take it with her on the plane for her entire family's visit to grandma's in the Midwest."

So, if you're short on time, but still want to feel like you can cook a great, healthy meal, pre-assembled meals can save time and money without sacrificing taste.

While the pre-assembled meal idea is a wonderful way to get families to eat together again; they are not alway nutritionally sound. I contacted one of the companys to ask for their nutritional analysis. They admitted that they do not provide this service and that they use processed ingredients. This can be a problem for those watching calories, on a diabetic meal plan or healthy heart plan. The flip side is that they do provide portion control. As a registered dietician, I would like to see the nutrional breakdown of the meal and a choice of quality ingredients. Given this information, I would recommend these companies to my clients.
I will have to say in response to the previous comment. The best one to use, if you are looking to watch your calories and how healthy the food is. The best one would be Design Dinners. On their website they provide the Nutritional information per serving. Also, they have a similar system to help you track points, if you are currently using Weight Watchers. I have used this program, and I found the food to be great and very useful when watching what I eat.
I have been purchasing these meals for a few months now from Dinners Done Right. As a single person I who finds it hard to cook for one, these meals have been the perfect answer for me. I get the 12 meal half-portions, DDR prepares them for a few dollars more. I no longer find myself going to a fast food place or a restaurant when I can have a great meal at home. I also am on a low fat, low sugar, low carb program and find that these meals have not hindered in any way my ability to lose weight and maintain a healthy diet. I no longer buy food at the grocery store only to not feel like cooking it later and feeding the garbage disposal. I have saved money, time and stress using DDR.
Try "Month of Meals" in Redmond If you're looking for delicious AND nutritious. They are very careful about the types of meat they use (lean, antibiotic-free, etc....). All the ingredients are fresh & high-quality. I think M.O.M. has been around over 6 years.
I ditto the comment re: Month of Meals. They provide nutritional information for ALL of their meals, PLUS you DO NOT HAVE TO COOK! You just order your meals on line and then arrange a time to pick them up. Quick, easy and nutritious!
I agree about MONTH OF MEALS. They should advertise more; it's the best kept secret around! Very nutritious meals, big portions, good variety.
I was surprised Month of Meals (M.O.M.) was not included in the article. M.O.M. has been a lifesaver for me as a single mom with Grandma (80) living with us as well. They prepare the meals, the monthly variety has been wonderful, and we all have been eating better these past six months. My kids, picky eaters to match the best of them, have been trying and ENJOYING all kinds of new dishes. Thank you M.O.M.!!
Editor's note: Thanks for the tip about Month of Meals. We've added it to our list of locations.
Wow. I can't believe that the best of the best hasn't even been mentioned here. Dinners Ready, with locations throughout the Puget Sound, also lists nutritional information and provides service and meal selection that is unmatched, in my opinion. I've found their locations to be the roomiest, brightest and cleanest of all, the latter of which is extremely important to me when considering preparing meals to eat. A refrigerated storage area, which some offer but many don't, is just one of the other little things that I've found to be refreshing at Dinners Ready. Who wants their chicken dish to be stored at room temperature while they finish preparing other meals? The variety and selection and most importantly, the taste of the meals, always seems to impress. The list wouldn't be complete without adding Dinners Ready!
I have to admit that I am prejudice as the president of Dinners Ready. I would ask that you visit any of our competitors and then visit any of the 15 Dinners Ready stores in the Puget Sound area. I am confident that you will find a positive difference. We guarantee it!
I've tried both Dinners Ready and Dream Dinners and prefer the later for it's flexibility (no order limit on any meal), menu variety, and nutrition. Dinners Ready needs to fix their menu - too many meals each month are loaded with fat (40-50% of calories).
When comparing the November menus for Dinners Ready and Dream Dinners, the average calorie content for the 16 Dinners Ready meals offered is 386.4. Average Fat is 16.8. For the 12 meals that Dream Dinners offers, the average calorie content is 330.8. Average Fat is 16.9. I've also found that the amount of food I bring home, in weight, is substantially more from Dinners Ready. I would simply encourage folks to try 6 meals from both and then decide which you prefer.
Dream Dinners, Design Dinners, Dinners Ready, Dinners Done Right {I will be trying Month of Meals} have all had a different twist. However, since Dream Dinners was the original company in Washington State, the food I find is very generous in the portion size, and very friendly atmosphere, I prefer them over all else. Thank you for this article, I have passed this onto my friends across the country.
When Dinners Ready started in 2003, I thought the Home Meal Replacement business couldn't get any better. But I've recently been going to Day-by-Day Gourmet, founded by the same man who founded Dinners Ready, and have I been impressed! He did it very well the first time, but his second company is WAY better! Now I can have honest-to-goodness gourmet meals that are HEALTHY, too! With the former Galloping Gourmet turned healthy eating guru on board, as well as several other well known and regarded "foodies", it will take a lot of doing to beat what Day-by-Day Gourmet has to offer!
