Okay, class, are you ready to write? Ready your pencils. 3-2-1 ... Wait, did put on your anti-gravity suit? This week, my daughter's class took a trip to space - the space of 826 Seattle, also known as Greenwood Space Supply Company. It's hard to out-odd Archie McPhee, but the Space Supply ties together writing workshops and really weird alien gear.

I first encountered Kristen Loffer Theiss' work a few years ago at Lucca on Ballard Avenue. Her thread drawings of an owl, a crow and a nest full of eggs stopped me cold. They were little works of art for the sofa, perched on plump throw pillows. After learning that Theiss "drew" those evocative images freehand in one continuous motion using a sewing machine, I was even more impressed.

Our nation's credit economy is boomeranging on us, from the national to household level. New debt and default fires seem to break out daily. Without intervention, we may be setting up our children for equally bad habits. And you don't want your kids to turn out like the ones in this disturbing New York Times article.

Minding the Store
This October, local company BabyLegs is releasing a new "Pink Ribbon" style that comes in pale pink with a pattern of bright pink breast cancer-awareness ribbons. They retail for $12 a pair, with 10 percent of the proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen foundation.

I've noticed quite a few children (and parents) sporting Obama tees this year, as shown in the photo at left, taken at the Ballard Market. In fact, these locally-made tees are so popular that they're sold in 13 Seattle stores.
