Remember that "Little House on the Prairie" when Mary Ingalls got her groovy granny glasses and went through some perfunctory peer humiliation? Apparently, times have changed for the better.

On Tuesday, May 27, at noon, the Seattle Parks and Recreational Department's registration opens for their fact-packed nature programs. If you haven't been before, the Environmental Learning Centers' classes aren't snore-inducing biology lectures. Instead, the hikes and walks are more like a hands-on PBS nature show, without the gory bits.

Seattle mom Christine Hanna didn't relish the thought of Bisphenol-A leaching from her baby's bottle into his morning meal. As an employee at the Sightline Institute, a non-profit environmental think tank, she felt perturbed at the chemicals in "all kinds of products that babies drink and eat from, mouth, and sleep on."

While at Sugarlump, a childrens' consignment shop in Madison Valley, a couple of days ago, I found what I think is the perfect jacket for little ones in Seattle. This little rain coat from GO!Globo looks common enough, but it features a post-consumer recycled plastic fleece lining, made from old PET bottles. More exciting for the user is the fact that it folds into itself to become a handy little backpack, so mom and dad aren't stuck carrying the thing when the weather warms up.
