DERMagic shampoo bars cast an organic spell on pets' sensitive skin

This spring, Seattle-based DERMagic Skin Care for Animals added Certified Organic Shampoo Bars to their line of products that guarantees our furry friends a healthy, shiny coat.
Each handmade bar is made from natural ingredients such as coconut, castor, jojoba and olive oils. All are also scented by essential oils. Each 3.5-ounce shampoo bar ($7.95) packs a serious punch and is designed to outlast a 16-ounce bottle of liquid shampoo.
Shampoo bars are available in three varieties. I tried the rosemary and lavender scent on my own pup, Jake. Not only did Jake come out smelling like a relaxing spa treatment, but that particular bar also promotes cell renewal and hair growth, helps to eliminate dandruff and keeps pesky insects away.
There is also a peppermint and tea tree oil bar, which focuses on itch relief and has antifungal and antibacterial properties; and a lemon and eucalyptus version, which is perfect for treating wounds and insect bites.
Dr. Adelia Ritchie, an organic chemist and dog enthusiast, founded the company after her own prized Yorkshire terrier developed severe skin allergies. Eventually her dog's condition worsened to the point that her veterinarian recommended putting the canine down.
Unwilling to give up on her beloved pet, Ritchie set to work in her lab until she found a successful mixture. Within six months of using the DERMagic recipe, Ritchie's Yorkshire terrier was back on her paws.
In addition to the new shampoo bars, the DERMagic line includes liquid shampoo and conditioner ($17.95), itch-soothing hot spot lotion and salve ($14.95-$24.95), and a cell-restoring creme ($19.95) that aids in the healing process of animals with skin ailments. And don't forget the aromatherapy bath salts ($9-$14.95) before it's time for your four-legged friend to make a splash in the tub.
DERMagic Skin Care for Animals products can be purchased online at dermagic.com as well as at local pet shops like Crown Hill Pet Supply, Fido-n-Scratch, Great Dog Shoppe, Ideal Pet and Urban Beast.
