Nicole Bembry, owner of just-opened Immortal Dog Pet Supply and Bakery, made tasty treats for humans before she decided to apply her talent to Seattle's canines. Today, her homemade dog biscuits are available at her Central District pet store, along with all-natural food, sustainable supplies and organic toys.

When Bembry started baking dog biscuits in 2006, she researched canine nutrition and recipes to ensure she was creating biscuits that would fulfill both dogs' dietary needs and their taste cravings.

Bembry uses only whole ingredients like oat flour, which she sources from a mill in Bellingham. She gets up at six each morning to bake 10 types of biscuits ($6-$12 per bag), many of which are non-wheat and come in flavors like sweet potato bacon and garlic cheddar.

Immortal Dog carries organic and healthy options in everything from dog sweaters to soy-bean kitty litter because Bembry wants local pets to live long, happy lives. And since a healthy lifestyle often starts with good diet, Bembry sells "a great selection of food that I stand behind and know all about." Dry ($14-$20) and frozen raw ($5.50-$30) cat and dog foods are available, including organic brands.

When it comes to stocking toys, Bembry chooses organic, biodegradable or recycled options because "things for your pet never last. Pets get a hold of them and then they're gone." One of her favorites, Headsies ($5-$12), are boiled-wool toys colored with organic dyes to look like various animals.

Bembry also stocks leashes and collars ($6-$28) made from sustainable, recycled materials; Reknitz dog sweaters ($38) made from would-be-discarded scraps from knitting mills; and West Paw eco-friendly beds made from recycled fabrics ($20-$150).

Immortal Dog is bright and welcoming, and Bembry, who encourages customers to bring in their pets, often brings her own papillons, Mischa and Sophie, to work with her.

"It's amazing to live in a city where people really care about what they're putting back into the world," Bembry says, and she prides herself on supplying Seattle pet owners with "all the nuts and bolts they need and some fun stuff to boot."
