I always get nervous before a big sale -- like I should've trained harder, stretched more, recruited more friends to help fend off crazed shoppers. But the Crave Spring Market Party, from noon to 4 p.m. June 1 at Seattle Center's Fisher Pavilion, is nothing to stress about, particularly since there will be plenty of opportunities for pampering.

Fashion, philanthropy and a chance to get into Justin Timberlake's jeans. If that sounds like a dreamy combination, then it's time to dump your winter wear, shimmy into something springlike (even if the weather doesn't cooperate) and head to the second annual Thaw fashion show, May 1 in Sodo.

In a city where polar fleece often passes for cocktail wear, Barneys New York is a beacon of style in a sea of Dockers. The trouble is, even those who will gladly drop $250 on a pair of Rock & Republic jeans at Nordstrom find Barneys intimidating.

Can there really be an entire book on the skirt? The answer is yes – and it's a fun read to boot. "The Long (and Short) of It: The Madcap History of the Skirt" (HarperCollins, 2007; $14.95) by Seattleite Ali Basye, is a clever little tome that traces the history of the skirt from the loin cloth to bustled skirts, skorts, and pencil styles to the low-rise mini. (Hmm, the last is suspiciously like the first.)

Jan. 15-31 is the shopping dead zone. Shelves are picked clean, racks are sparsely filled. Retailers are focused on taking inventory and waiting on spring arrivals. Sure, there are plenty of sales out there, but if you're looking for something new, fresh and spring-y, where do you go?

Owner Dana Smith, a former registered nurse, decided to take a break from health care and follow her passion for fashion. Because of her late-in-the-year opening, the shop is a work in progress and hints at things to come. Smith emphasizes the quality in her selection of clothing and accessories. "I'm looking for new labels for Seattle," says Smith, who is targeting women in their 20s to early 50s who want progressive pieces.

I opted for the standard closet rescue and wardrobe update for $600. The process generally takes three hours, and additional consultations are $100 an hour (a bargain considering the prices of some consultants!). It starts with a thorough questionnaire you fill out on your own time followed by a one-on-one review with Howard. "I like to access a client's attributes and keep those in mind when going through a wardrobe. I want to make sure they're connected," she says.

Skinny jeans are simply jeans with straight legs. The ankles are skinny to varying degrees; Kate Moss-types can rock the peg-leg at 10 inches around, but a more straight-leg 14- to 16-inch perimeter achieves the look just as well. And with just about every designer denim line producing a skinny jean, there's no acceptable reason to wear those so-five-years-ago boot cuts ever again. At least not until they come back into favor.
