Simple wood shelves are filled with functional and decorative glass which pops with color against the white-painted walls. At any given time Ida has the designs of up to six local glass artists on display. Most pieces are seconds and are discounted 30 to 50 percent. "It's a chance for the artists to sell directly to the public - and also to meet our neighbors," says Ida.

The shop is the brainchild of a Ballard resident and mommy of two, Sarah Furstenberg. She is a textile designer and illustrator who managed a toy store in Berkeley, Calif., before moving to Seattle to open Clover. "The concept is to engage and amuse children, to wean them away from television with dress up, musical instruments, science projects, games, and many other activities," explains Furstenberg, who has packed her whimsical store with play kitchens, little wooden animals, classic toys such as jacks and rubber balls, and futuristic remote-controlled robots.

This tiny gift shop is perfectly located in the heart of Madrona, right next to Verité -- the original home of Cupcake Royale, makers of those liberally frosted mini-cakes gaily topped with sprinkles. The charming storefront is just as enticing as the cupcakes, painted celadon green and festooned with flowers.

Just about everything in the Rem Koolhaas-designed Seattle Central Library is far-out, so it's not surprising that the library gift shop has a clever set-up. When it's closed, the third-floor retail store known as the FriendShop resembles a giant, sky-colored box. During business hours, it slides apart into five separate structures loaded with gifts and artwork crafted by local artists.

ROCHE HARBOR When we planned our summer sailing trip to the San Juans, we knew we'd do our annual hike up Mount Young behind English Camp. At the summit one morning, a foil-wrapped loaf of hot blueberry bread from a knapsack was a tasty complement to the island-studded view far into Canada.
Not in our plans, but now stamped just as firmly in our memory, was another morning last month spent wandering a new find, Westcott Bay Reserve, a 19-acre sculpture park on the edge of Roche Harbor resort, barely a stone's fling from the top of Mount Young.

The Olympic West Arttrek is not your ordinary art walk. No strolling from studio to studio. No sipping wine with artsy types in ritzy galleries. No mere three-hour investment of time.
This is a tour that requires driving, planning and, to do it all, at least a couple of days.
The self-guided tour was created in 1993 to lead visitors to arts, crafts, antiques, shops and gifts, from Kalaloch to Neah Bay to Lake Crescent, a distance of about 150 miles.
