Family reunion: Take the (older) kids to meet Lucy at the Pacific Science Center

My daughter was uncharacteristically quiet. What's up? I asked.

"I have so many questions in my brain," she said. "And I don't know where to start."

That's why you should take your elementary-aged child to meet Lucy, at the Pacific Science Center's exhibit "Lucy's Legacy." It gets little minds shifting into higher gears. I couldn't keep up with the questions, post-visit.

Macrina's new SoDo bakery is the icing on the cake

If you're used to thinking of SoDo as a desolate no man's land, try walking into Macrina's new café and state-of-the-art bakery around lunchtime.

If I had a nickel for every dog tag... Or better yet, if I had a nickel dog tag

Scientist-turned-software-project-manager-turned-artist Anandi Raman Creath calls herself a geek at heart -- but we think these not-so-geeky custom dog tags are pretty cool. And, they're made right here in the Northwest (Redmond, to be exact).

Each tag is hand cut from a sheet of nickel silver, hand stamped, filed to remove sharp edges, then oxidized and polished to bring out the letters and designs. Tags are approximately 1.5-inches by 1.25-inches and can fit five lines of text. Plus, Anandi will donate $1 for each tag sold to the Humane Society.

Spud-o-rama: Mr. Potatohead at The Children’s Museum

In late September, “The Adventures of Mr. Potatohead” arrived at The Children’s Museum. We didn’t make it over until this week, and maybe I should’ve waited longer. My son now thinks constantly about this exhibit. He asks to go back daily, and I know we’ll return this weekend. Why?

Well, because he loves Mr. Potatohead in an obsessive way. Yeah, I don’t understand that, either. But also because of the exhibit’s multiple hands-on opportunities, which I do understand. He bounced from activity to activity, each one better than the last.

Share your recipes for healthy, delicious dog treats

I'm not a baker myself -- in fact, I rarely even cook. But still, there's something about creating something from scratch that feels homey, especially during the holidays. That's why, in its upcoming holiday issue, CityDog Magazine (for which I am also the editor) will feature recipes from Seattle-area dog lovers. If you have a dog treat recipe you would like to share with fellow Pet Dish and CityDog readers, please tell me about it in the comment section below.

Maki & Yaki: Satisfying teriyaki-joint staples, and then some

Sitting pretty on a prominent corner in the new Rainier Vista housing development, Maki & Yaki is poised to capitalize on the revitalization of the MLK corridor. The restaurant is steps away from the Columbia City light-rail stop and across the street from a shiny new Boys & Girls Club (opening in November).

But in addition to location, location, location, Maki & Yaki has food, food, food working in its favor.
