Seattle

Seattle's lively South Lake Union neighborhood

Enjoy an in-town getaway in the burgeoning community

August 7, 2008

ELLEN M. BANNER / THE SEATTLE TIMES

Take a kayak for a spin around the lake during an in-town vacation in the South Lake Union neighborhood.

Get away without going away. Here are prices* for a special night for two on the town — with a sleepover.

Your room: The Silver Cloud Inn in the heart of Seattle's lively South Lake Union neighborhood, two miles from downtown via the new South Lake Union Streetcar. Doubles start at $179 (Internet special) for an August Saturday night stay. 1150 Fairview Ave. N.; 206-447-9500.

Dinner: Dockside on the deck at the BluWater Bistro. Ceviche bowl to share, roll-your-own mahi-mahi tacos, two glasses of pinot grigio, $58.90. 1001 Fairview Ave. N.; 206-447-0769.

Breakfast: Comes with the room, but work up an appetite for a late-morning brunch with a walk to REI's flagship store, 222 Yale Ave. N., for some shopping and a stop at the Southlake Grill. Outdoor seating on nice days. Veggie frittata, shrimp and crab omelet and two mimosas: $26. 1253 Thomas St., across from REI; 206-621-1090.

Before checkout: Rent a kayak ($18 an hour for doubles) and paddle around the lake. Rentals at Moss Bay Rowing Club, 1001 Fairview Ave. N. (just outside BluWater Bistro); 206-682-2031.

The damage: $282 + taxes and tips.
